2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. 2021 Volvo XC90: The GLE Leads the Way

A leader in luxury SUVs, the Mercedes-Benz GLE is defining the future of the segment with new technology and continuous improvement of its powertrains and driving experience. The GLE's pioneering history in the segment takes on a new chapter in the 2021 model year.

Competitors are working hard to replicate the GLE's success, but Mercedes-Benz is making it difficult for them to catch up. Here, we illustrate this by comparing the GLE to the 2021 Volvo XC90.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE makes a strong power statement

The GLE features a group of four models that provide a blend of equipment and performance that satisfy a cross-section of needs. The GLE 350 includes a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that outputs 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, which is great for reaching many destinations while keeping an eye on efficiency. The XC90's base model, the T5-equipped Momentum, has lower ratings of 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The GLE 450 makes a confident jump into performance with a 3.0-litre turbocharged engine with 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The XC90 competes with the T6 powertrain that tapers off at 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which results in less capability.

The XC90's T8 powertrain is the most capable of the Volvo lineup, producing 400 horsepower. However, the GLE AMG lineup takes over with the 53 model's 429 horsepower and the 63's sky-high 603 horsepower.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE offers both advanced and simple advantages

The GLE features the ground-breaking Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). The system uses artificial intelligence and more to help drivers establish the best human-vehicle interaction possible. Using voice commands or touchscreen inputs, drivers and passengers can alter a long list of vehicle functions. The system also includes one of the most advanced navigation systems consumer use, adding to the excitement of this technology.

Sometimes the best features don't include the latest gadgets, but simple design. The GLE features over 2,050 litres of cargo volume behind the front seats, which leads over the XC90's capability. Driver and passengers also enjoy more front and rear headroom and shoulder room, and second row passengers receive a 100 mm advantage in legroom over the XC90.
