Comparing the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE and the 2024 BMW X5

The midsize luxury SUV segment is known for its fierce competition, featuring leading-edge models from automaker with established reputations. Among these standouts, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE and the recently redesigned 2024 BMW X5 vie for attention. Canadian buyers have long favored the Mercedes-Benz GLE for its balanced delivery of power, sophistication, and versatility. Although the X5 has introduced impressive updates for 2024, the new GLE has also been redesigned and features more of what has made the GLE one of the best-selling midsize luxury SUVs on the market.

Interior Space: The GLE Excels

In terms of interior space, the GLE clearly outperforms the X5. Although both vehicles have similar overall lengths (the GLE measures 194.3 inches, while the X5 stands at 194.2 inches), the GLE offers a more spacious interior in key areas.

For example, front and rear legroom in the GLE measures 40.3 and 40.9 inches, respectively, outdoing the X5's 39.8 and 37.4 inches. Rear headroom in the GLE is also more generous, with 36.9 inches compared to the X5's. The GLE's 59.3 inches of front shoulder room and 58.3 inches of rear shoulder room also provide ample space for passengers.

Cargo capacity is another area where the GLE edges out the X5, boasting 74.9 cubic feet compared to the X5's 72.3 cubic feet. Both vehicles offer standard seating for five, with an optional seven-seater configuration, ensuring versatility to match varying passenger needs.

Impressive Towing Features

When it comes to towing, the 2024 GLE is enhanced with features that make every journey easier and that you won’t find in the 2024 X5. Its ball neck swings out conveniently with a simple button press, retracting effortlessly when not in use. An added feature allows secure bicycle transportation via two extra bolts. The Trailer route planner in the vehicle's MBUX navigation system plans routes suitable for the attached trailer, accounting for route widths, heights, and weight restrictions. An extended Trailer Manoeuvring Assist feature now offers camera-based stabilization, even for trailers with their own stabilization against rolling movements. The system assists in managing the steering angle of the towing vehicle, allowing precise positioning and straight-line reversing of trailers. While this feature is optional, it can also be added as an "Over the Air" update after purchasing the GLE.

Better Off The Beaten Path

Mercedes-Benz has redefined the Off-Road Package for GLE models to ensure it provides even better performance. This package includes an underride guard and an optional AIRMATIC air suspension, offering an additional 30 millimetres of ground clearance. With the latest MBUX system, the "Off-Road Mode" visually presents key data such as gradient, roll angle, compass, and steering angle. Additionally, when combined with the optional Parking Package with a 360° camera, a "transparent bonnet" function becomes available. This function generates a virtual view beneath the vehicle's front, revealing the front wheels, their steering position, and potential obstacles. This feature is beneficial for navigating around obstacles, ramps, or crests, enhancing the vehicle's off-road capability and safety. Many of these features and capabilities are not offered on the new X5.

In summary, while the recently redesigned 2024 BMW X5 is a notable contender, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE still offers significant advantages in terms of availability, affordability, and interior space. Consequently, B.C. buyers in the market for a midsize luxury SUV can confidently opt for the 2024 GLE, knowing it delivers everything they expect from their vehicle.
