The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class shows that entry-level can rhyme with advanced

Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled the Concept CLA Class, a vision of what to expect from the brand’s next generation of entry-level models. As part of efforts to consolidate its lineup, Mercedes-Benz announced earlier this year that it will combine its entry-level models into four different vehicles that will be based on the upcoming MMA platform. The Concept CLA Class is the first product to showcase what these models will be capable of in terms of technologies, powertrains, and sustainability. In addition to the sedan, two SUVs and a shooting break variant will be based on this platform in the coming years.

Using new technologies to enhance the user experience

Mercedes-Benz believes that the user experience starts with the design of the vehicle, which is why innovative LED lighting technologies are used to create a distinctive appearance that features illuminated logos and welcome sequences that greet the driver every time they approach the vehicle. Inside, the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system takes place on the dashboard with a new full-width glass screen that incorporates driver information, infotainment menus, and a passenger entertainment screen inside of a single unit. Since enhancing the driving experience is a priority, a new LIDAR-equipped version of the company’s Level 2 driver assistance system will be included, with the possibility of updating to a Level 3 system baked into the vehicle’s hardware.

More range and faster-charging thanks to the EQXX

The Mercedes-Benz EQXX concept showcased a large number of new powertrain technologies which the Concept CLA Class promises to take to production. These include new battery chemistries that feature more power and a lower environmental impact, an 800-volt charging infrastructure that can add 400 kilometers of WLTP range in only 15 minutes, as well as two-speed electric drive units that claim 93% efficiency from the battery to the wheels. These motors and gearboxes have been developed entirely by Mercedes-Benz engineers in order to be more efficient and better for the environment, with a very low content of rare earths. Since driving dynamics are part of the brand’s DNA, the standard powertrain setup for the next CLA will comprise a single drive unit on the rear axle, with a dual motor configuration featured on the options list.

On the road to net zero

Mercedes-Benz aims to achieve carbon neutrality along the value chain for all of its new vehicles by 2039, and the Concept CLA Class shows how the next generation of entry-level models will be a big step in this direction. Indeed, all aspects of the vehicle have been engineered to reduce its carbon footprint, from the type of steel and aluminum used in the body to the leather tanning process for the interior. Combined with more environmentally friendly battery materials and production processes, the MMA-based models are expected to generate 40% fewer emissions along the value chain than current vehicles.
